Ce documentaire explore l'existence incroyable de Merian C. Cooper, de la période où il officiait comme soldat et pilote au cours de trois guerre, à ses exploits à Hollywood, comme réalisateur, producteur et précurseur en matière d'inventions cinématographiques. Merian C. Cooper, père de King-Kong, a commencé à penser à ce film en 1931. Son imagination est alors exacerbée par les expéditions aventurières et scientifiques des années 20 relatant l'existence de créatures terrifiantes découvertes à Sumatra. Il suggéra alors au producteur David O. Selznick (président de la RKO) de réaliser un film en studio, dont le héros serait un gorille géant.
